I had a very busy day planned for Day 6 of Creation in which we teach about the creation of the birds of the air and the creatures of the Sea.
After doing our daily morning routine and bible, we immediately set out for our field trips for the day.
We first visited Kookabura Bird Shop in Carrollton, TX to visit their array of small to large birds. We were so excited to go and visit all of the new Amazons that they have in stock, along with their 3 Macaws.
The sweet sweet staff members there, also allowed us to hold this little cockatiel - Amelia tried, but was scared of the sharp claws. This was a very sweet bird!
To keep with the theme, we ate a bird for snack - more precisely a bread owl!
For the next part of our field trip on an increasingly hot day - was the North Dallas Aquarium store in Carrollton. Seriously....who needs to pay an aquarium?? We saw everything from seahorses to sting rays to a huge array of fresh and saltwater fish and water creatures!
These two were my favorite -
The kids duplicated the art activity from the bird store to the aquarium. I allowed them to pick their favorite fish and to draw. They chose every fish found in Finding Nemo to draw! Ha!
We came home and rested with lunch and a show to bring the temperature down and afterwards proceeded to Science. Using Glimpses from God - Day 5 - We talked about how amazing God made birds - their feathers having the ability to wick and the speed of flapping ranging from 20 flaps to 770 flaps per 10 seconds depending on the variety of bird.
Then, having just come home from the beach and knowing the activity was approaching, I purchased a large sand dollar and we talked about its amazing structure and the representation of God within it.
Upon breaking it open, there are a handful of pieces that look a lot like doves. So cool!
We continued on with Day 5 of our Creation book and Noah thought it was quite funny that he turned it from Day 5 to Jonah and the whale! Silly boy!
We ended with Math, still using Saxon K Math. I combined two lessons today - first we talked and created pictographs representing the number of boys and girls in our family - we proceeded to include ourselves, our dogs and the fish.
Finally, we ended a very very long day with 1:1 correlation using teddy/froggie counters and pattern blocks. This was a cute and fun activity that really had them thinking. Loved seeing them figure out the problem that I presented to them. I'm also so impressed that Amelia is thriving so well, not yet being 4 years old!
Leave a comment! I'd love to hear from you!!!
So fun! I want to hear your thoughts on Saxon K math. I am wondering if it will be ok for my little man who is 4.
